How to choose a business networking group

August 26, 2026 · 5 min read

Joining a business networking group is a commitment of time, money and reputation. The right group becomes a reliable source of warm introductions. The wrong one becomes a weekly breakfast that never pays off.

Start with who is in the room. Look for members who serve the same kinds of clients you do, but don't compete with you. Those are your natural referral partners.

Next, look at deal fit. A group of consumer-facing local businesses works differently than one built around enterprise sales cycles. Match the group to the size and length of your typical deal.

Ask how referrals are tracked. If nobody can tell you what happened to last quarter's introductions, the group is running on goodwill alone.

Finally, ask how contribution is recognized. Groups that reward the people who make introductions tend to keep their best connectors engaged.
