Referral fees explained: how they work and what to consider

May 13, 2026 · 5 min read

A referral fee is compensation paid to someone who introduces a client or opportunity that turns into business. It's common in many professional services and sales-driven industries.

Fees are usually structured as a percentage of the first deal, a flat amount, or a share of revenue for a set period. The best structure is the one both sides understand before the introduction happens.

Some professions have specific rules about referral payments, including certain legal, financial, real estate and healthcare roles. Always check the rules that apply to your industry and location, and get advice if you're unsure.

Put agreements in writing. Clear terms protect the relationship far more than an informal promise made over coffee.

Inside The Connective, Nolodex records the agreement alongside the introduction, so when a deal closes, everyone can see what was agreed and the payout is honored.
